Do you fancy solving a puzzle? Treasure trail maps are available in six Aberdeenshire towns containing clues which once all six have been completed reveal a famous location.

The maps are available in libraries at Banchory, Banff, Macduff, Oldmeldrum, Stonehaven and Westhill. The trail consists of six clues which must be solved by walking the route. Once they have been unravelled, a six digit number will be revealed on the map which can then be taken to the library to collect a prize. Once all six treasure trails have been completed the mystery location will emerge.

Prizes include a limited edition pin badge complete with a logo depicting a vista from each town or a stylish tote bag. Each participant will receive a Treasure Trail passport which will be stamped at each location the trail has been completed.

Cllr Peter Argyle, Aberdeenshire Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee chair, said: “This is a really innovative way to encourage residents, families and visitors alike to partake in gentle exercise whilst learning about Aberdeenshire’s rich history and cultural heritage. I would like to thank the Smarter Choices, Smarter Places programme for their generous funding for this worthwhile initiative.”

Committee vice chair, Cllr John Cox said: “I am really impressed with the design of the colourful treasure trail maps and the care and attention to detail that has gone into the pin badges and tote bags. I hope that people across Aberdeenshire will enjoy completing each trail over the coming months. The fact that this is a free activity will no doubt encourage all people to take part. I would like to wish all those participating the very best of luck.”

The Treasure Trail maps are a pilot initiative to support the council’s work in encouraging more sustainable and active travel in our communities. If successful, the project will be rolled out as part of Aberdeenshire’s wider ‘Integrated Travel Town’ project work.
